Data Destruction
Data Destruction deletes files and folders safely and permanently. This way they cannot be recovered with undelete programs or even by data recovery labs with advanced tools and instruments. The data destruction is done by overwriting all the data the files contain. You can choose different methods for wiping the files, depending on the level of security you need.
Why destroy data?
If you have any important, valuable, secret, personal or sensitive data on computers that can be accessed by others, you should consider deleting it with Ashampoo HDD Control 2 instead of the ordinary Windows® delete functions. When you delete files or folders in Windows® no data is really deleted from your hard drive or other media. Windows® simply makes one small change to the file’s entry in the directory table. The file is then no longer listed in the Windows® Explorer and its data can be overwritten by other files, but until this happens both the file name and its data are still there on your hard drive.
Please note that files deleted with Data Destruction cannot be recovered!
Procedure
Just click on the Data Destruction tab of Ashampoo HDD Control 2 (see image below).
Destruction methods and options
In this module you need to choose the file destruction method that suits your security needs. The default setting will produce secure results for most purposes, but you should select higher security levels, if you are deleting very sensitive data.
The options of deletion method can be found in Options.
Selecting files and folders to be deleted
Select either option: Add folder or Add file(s). Then select the file(s) or folder in the file explorer and click Open or OK. You should always remember that files and folder deleted with Data Destruction cannot be recovered! Click on Destroy to start the destruction process.
Deleting selected files and folders
Click on Destroy to start the destruction process and follow the instructions shown, in order to irreversibly delete the selected file(s) and folder(s). Please make sure you really want to delete the selected file(s) and folder(s), as file(s) and folder(s) deleted with Data Destruction cannot be recovered! Deleting the selected file(s) and folder(s) might take a while, especially if you selected a very safe destruction method. After the completion of the process, a result window will open automatically.
Info: If you get the message that certain files cannot be deleted, those files might be still open or used by another program. If you still want to delete those files, you’ll will have to shut down the application that uses the file and then select the file again. Folders can only be deleted, if they don’t contain any files. This means that you can only delete a folder, when you also delete all files it contains. Otherwise you’ll get an error message with the note that the folder cannot be deleted.
