Defrag

HDD Control trenner Defragmentation
As you use your hard disk the information on it becomes “fragmented”, making your computer slower. In the defragmentation the files are organized in a new, coherent way. The Defrag does the best job ever of defragmenting your hard disks and it comes with a background service that automatically keeps your hard drives defragmented whenever your computer is idle.

You can run Defrag manually using different methods or schedule it to run at regular times or intervals.

The functions of Defrag are easy to use. Choose a partition (e.g. C:, for more than one keep the ctrl-key pressed) with a left mouse click and click on Analyze (see picture below) to start an analysis. After this Ashampoo HDD Control 2 will display the degree of defragmentation of this hard disk. Start Defragmentation will initiate the process, Stop finishes it. Although Defrag offers great performance, the defragmentation of big partitions may take some time. If you don’t like to wait – just use the proactive defragmentation (see below).

During the defragmentation a visual exposition shows the blocks (files) which are moved at your hard disk (see picture below). The legend describes the usage / status / meaning of the files on the hard disk.

Proactive Defragmentation

The technology which is used in Defrag is, like most other brilliant innovations, actually quite simple. The goal in the development of the proactive technology was to relieve the computer system administrator or user from tedious and time consuming tasks.

Hard drive maintenance can be extremely time consuming. This was confirmed by our customers time and again, requiring the tedious configuration and the elaborate scheduling of earlier generation defragmenters. Defrag is therefore designed without the need for configuration and scheduling, yet this extremely powerful technology can lead to extraordinary results. Defrag controls how the operating system writes files on the disk. As soon as a file is saved by Microsoft Windows in more than one fragment, Defrag monitors this and memorizes the file name internally. As soon as there are adequate free resources to run the task, Defrag automatically performs the defragmentation of that file. This action occurs proactively (in realtime); that means that it is performed completely independently by the software and requires no user interaction. Any running processes will not be impaired.

Together with an initial defragmentation, which is also done completely automatically after the installation, the optimal state of files on the disk files is virtually assured. And this is maintained not only after the initial defragmentation but but automatically thereafter using the proactive technology.

Where to find / how to activate this feature?

To pause the defragmentation (proactive or manual defrag), choose Pause (see picture below). To re-scan for hard drives (this may be useful for externally connected hard drives) click on the corresponding button (Refresh Drives).
